The Role of Location Particles
In Korean, you use particles attached to nouns to show their grammatical function. To talk about location, the two most important particles are 에 and 에서 .
While both can often be translated as "at" or "in" in English, they have distinct uses and are not interchangeable. The choice between them depends entirely on the verb used in the sentence.
에 is typically used for a static location (where something is ) or a destination (where someone is going ).
에서 is used for an action location (where an action happens ).
Using '에' for Static Location & Destination
The particle 에 has two primary functions related to location. Understanding both is key to using it correctly.
1. Static Location (at, in, on)
Use 에 with verbs of existence, most commonly 있다 (to be, to exist) and 없다 (to not be, to not exist). It marks the place where a person or thing is located.
고양이가 집에 있어요.
The cat is at home .
책상 위에 책이 없어요.
There is no book on the desk .
사무실 에 있어요.
I am at the office .
2. Destination (to)
Use 에 with verbs of movement to indicate the destination. Common verbs include 가다 (to go), 오다 (to come), and 다니다 (to attend, commute).
학교 에 가요.
I'm going to school .
친구가 한국 에 와요.
My friend is coming to Korea .
부산 에 갈 거예요.
I'm going to Busan .
Using '에서' for Action Location
The particle 에서 marks the location where an action takes place. If a dynamic action is happening at a place, you must use 에서 .
This particle is paired with action verbs like 먹다 (to eat), 공부하다 (to study), 일하다 (to work), and 만나다 (to meet).
A good way to think about it is that 에서 answers the question, "Where is the verb happening?"
