Events that Start (시작하다)
The verb 시작하다 means "to start" or "to begin."
In Korean, when talking about schedules or events, we typically make the event the subject of the sentence. Instead of saying "I start the class," it is much more natural to say "The class starts."
High-Frequency Combinations
Korean · English
수업이 시작해요 · The class starts
회의가 시작해요 · The meeting starts
영화가 시작해요 · The movie starts
시험이 시작해요 · The exam starts
Events that Finish (끝나다)
The verb 끝나다 means "to end" or "to finish." Just like 시작하다 , we usually use the event or the task as the subject of the sentence.
High-Frequency Combinations
일이 끝났어요
수업이 끝났어요
회의가 끝났어요
Common Mistake: Do not use an object marker (을/를) with 끝나다. Say 일이 끝났어요, not 일을 끝났어요.
Checking Details (확인하다)
At school and work, you frequently need to check information or schedules. The verb 확인하다 means "to check" or "to confirm."
Because you are actively checking something, you use the object marker (을/를) with the noun.
