Core Grammar Rule: Directions & Requests
To ask for and give directions, Korean uses specific particles and verb endings. ~에서 ~까지 sets the start and end points, -(으)로 indicates the direction or method of travel, and -(으)세요 makes requests polite.
Meaning & Usage
Meaning: ~에서 ~까지 means "from ~ to ~". -(으)로 means "to/toward" a direction or "by/with" a method. -(으)세요 is a polite command ending, like "please do...".
When to use: Use this combination when telling someone how to get from point A to point B. It's essential for navigating cities, giving instructions, and using public transport. For example, "명동역에서 시청까지 지하철로 가세요" (From Myeongdong Station to City Hall, please go by subway).
Conjugation Rules
-(으)로: Attach -으로 to nouns ending in a consonant (except ㄹ). Attach -로 to nouns ending in a vowel or the consonant ㄹ.
-(으)세요: Attach -으세요 to verb stems ending in a consonant. Attach -세요 to verb stems ending in a vowel or the consonant ㄹ.
Noun + 으로/로 (Method/Direction) / Verb + (으)세요 (Polite Request)
Common Combinations
When giving directions, -(으)로 is almost always paired with direction words. Learning these as chunks will make your instructions sound much more natural and fluent.
Basic Directional Chunks
Context: These are the fundamental building blocks for telling someone where to go. You simply attach -(으)로 to the direction noun.
Example: 오른쪽으로 가세요. (Please go to the right.) 왼쪽으로 가세요. (Please go to the left.) 앞으로 쭉 가세요. (Please go straight ahead.)
Combining with Verbs of Movement
Context: After specifying the direction with -(으)로, you finish the instruction with a verb of movement like 가다 (to go), 오다 (to come), 나오다 (to come out), or 들어가다 (to go in).
Example: 2번 출구로 나오세요. (Please come out of exit 2.) 이 건물로 들어오세요. (Please come into this building.)
오른쪽으로 + 가세요 = Go to the right / 2번 출구로 + 나오세요 = Come out of exit 2
