Core Grammar Rule: ~기 위해(서)
This pattern is attached to a verb stem to express the purpose or intention of the action that follows. It's equivalent to "in order to" or "for the sake of" in English.
Meaning & Usage
Meaning: It indicates that the first clause is the reason or goal for the action in the second clause.
When to use: Use it when you want to clearly state your motivation or objective for doing something. It's common in both writing and speaking, especially when talking about plans, goals, or resolutions. The ~서 part is often omitted in spoken Korean, making it ~기 위해.
Conjugation Rules
Rule: Simply attach ~기 위해(서) to the verb stem. It doesn't matter if the stem ends in a vowel or a consonant.
Examples:
가다 (to go) → 가 + 기 위해서 → 가기 위해서 (in order to go)
먹다 (to eat) → 먹 + 기 위해서 → 먹기 위해서 (in order to eat)
만들다 (to make) → 만들 + 기 위해서 → 만들기 위해서 (in order to make)
Verb Stem + ~기 위해(서)
Native Nuance & Mistakes
To sound more natural, it's important to know when to use ~기 위해(서) and when other expressions are more suitable.
Purpose of Movement: ~(으)러 가다/오다
Context: When the main verb is a verb of movement like 가다 (to go), 오다 (to come), or 다니다 (to attend/commute), it is much more common and natural to use ~(으)러 to state the purpose of the movement. While ~기 위해(서) is grammatically correct, it can sound stiff or overly formal in this context.
Example: 친구를 만나러 시내에 가요. (I'm going downtown to meet a friend.) is more natural than 친구를 만나기 위해서 시내에 가요.
Purpose of State: Adjective + ~아/어지다
Context: ~기 위해(서) must be attached to an action verb. You cannot attach it directly to an adjective (descriptive verb). If your goal is to become a certain state (e.g., to become healthy), you must first change the adjective into a verb using the ~아/어지다 (to become ~) pattern.
Example: 건강해지기 위해서 (in order to become healthy) is correct. 건강하기 위해서 is incorrect.
Do: 건강해지기 위해서 운동해요. (O) / Don't: 건강하기 위해서 운동해요. (X)
