The Master Map of Modifiers
We have covered how to modify nouns to describe states, identities, and actions. Here is the master map of the basic forms.
States and Identities
Adjectives (States): Typically use -(으)ㄴ . Example: 예쁜 가방 (a pretty bag).
Nouns (Identities): Use -인 . Example: 학생인 친구 (a friend who is a student).
Present Actions
Verbs (Actions): Use -는 for actions happening now or regularly. Example: 일하는 사람 (a person who works).
Verb Modifiers and Time
When you use a verb to describe a noun, the modifier changes depending on the time of the action or the scene you are recalling. Let's compare them using the verb 읽다 (to read) and the noun 책 (book).
Modifier Form · Example Phrase · Meaning
-는 (Present) · 읽는 책 · the book I am reading
-(으)ㄴ (Completed) · 읽은 책 · the book I read / finished
-(으)ㄹ (Future) · 읽을 책 · the book I will read
-던 (Past Scene) · 읽던 책 · the book I used to read
-았/었던 (Past Completed) · 읽었던 책 · the book I had read
Notice how changing just one block of the word completely shifts the timeline of the noun phrase.
Building Larger Sentences
A noun-modifying phrase acts like one large noun block. Once you build it, you can place it anywhere a regular noun would go in a complete sentence.
From Simple Sentence to Noun Phrase
First, take a finished sentence: 제가 어제 책을 샀어요. (I bought a book yesterday.)
Turn it into a noun phrase by modifying the noun: 제가 어제 산 책 (the book I bought yesterday).
Embedding into a New Sentence
Now, insert that entire block into a new action: 제가 어제 산 책을 오늘 읽어요. (I am reading the book I bought yesterday, today.)
By using modifiers, you can combine multiple ideas into one fluid sentence without breaking it into short, separate statements.
