Don't A, but do B

This pattern is used to negate one action and propose an alternative. It's a direct way to say, "Don't do this, do that instead."

Formation

It combines two parts:

Part 1: Verb Stem + -지 말고

Part 2: An alternative action (usually a command)

The first part, -지 말고, comes from the verb 말다 (to stop, to not do). The -고 connector links this negative command to the suggested positive action that follows.

놀다 (to play) → 놀지 말고 (Don't play, and...)

걱정하다 (to worry) → 걱정하지 말고 (Don't worry, and...)

Usage

This structure is fundamentally a command or a strong suggestion. The speaker is correcting someone's current or intended action and redirecting them to a better alternative.

Correction: 택시 타지 말고 걸어. (Don't take a taxi, walk.)

Encouragement: 포기하지 말고 다시 해. (Don't give up, try again.)

놀지 말고 공부해. / 걱정하지 말고 그냥 해. / 그거 먹지 말고 이거 먹어. / 포기하지 말고 다시 해.

While both patterns can involve alternatives, they serve different functions. Confusing them can make your speech sound unnatural.

-지 말고: A Corrective Command

This pattern is used to prohibit one action and command another. It's direct and carries an imperative tone. You are telling someone what not to do and what they should do.

Meaning: "Don't do A, and (instead) do B."

Example: 사지 말고 만들어. (A command: Don't buy it, make it.)

-는 대신에: A Neutral Substitution

This pattern simply states that one action is done in place of another. It's descriptive, not commanding. It's often used to explain a choice you made or to present options.

Meaning: "Instead of doing A..."

Example: 사는 대신에 만들었어요. (A statement: Instead of buying it, I made it.)

Think of -지 말고 as a direct order and -는 대신에 as a neutral description of an alternative.

핑계 대지 말고 그냥 해. / 거짓말하지 말고 솔직히 말해. / 울지 말고 웃어. / 꿈꾸지 말고 현실을 봐.

The politeness level of a -지 말고 sentence is determined entirely by the verb ending in the second clause, not by -지 말고 itself.

Casual vs. Polite

Most of the script lines show this contrast clearly:

Casual (반말): Ends with 해, 봐, 먹어, etc. Used with close friends, family, or those younger than you.

자지 말고 일어나. (Don't sleep, wake up.)

Polite (해요체): Ends with 해요, 봐요, 먹어요, etc. This is the standard polite form for daily conversations.

자지 말고 일어나요. (Don't sleep, wake up.)

Matching Pronouns

When switching to polite speech, remember to adjust pronouns if necessary.

Casual: 핸드폰 보지 말고 날 봐. (Don't look at your phone, look at me.)

Polite: 핸드폰 보지 말고 저를 봐요. (Don't look at your phone, look at me.)

참지 말고 말해. / 참지 말고 말해요. / 가지 말고 여기 있어. / 가지 말고 여기 있어요. / 기다리지 말고 먼저 가. / 기다리지 말고 먼저 가요.
