Core Pattern Rule: Expressing Intentions with -(으)ㄹ 생각이다
This pattern is used to express a plan, intention, or thought about a future action. It literally translates to "to have the thought of doing..." and is a common way to talk about what you're considering.
Meaning & Usage
Meaning: "I'm thinking of/planning to [verb]..."
When to use: Use it when you have a specific intention in mind, but it's not yet a 100% confirmed or scheduled plan. It's stronger than a fleeting idea but less definite than saying "I will do it."
Formation
This pattern combines a verb with -(으)ㄹ 생각이다.
Verbs ending in a vowel or ㄹ: Attach -ㄹ 생각이다.
가다 (to go) → 갈 생각이다
팔다 (to sell) → 팔 생각이다
Verbs ending in a consonant: Attach -을 생각이다.
먹다 (to eat) → 먹을 생각이다
찾다 (to find) → 찾을 생각이다
The final 이다 is then conjugated based on politeness level (e.g., 이야, 이에요).
퇴사할 생각이야. / 한국어를 배울 생각이야. / 차를 살 생각이야. / 이사할 생각이야.
Synonyms & Differences
Korean has several ways to express future intentions. -(으)ㄹ 생각이다 has a specific nuance compared to other common patterns.
-(으)ㄹ 생각이다 vs. -(으)려고 하다
-(으)ㄹ 생각이다: Focuses on the thought or idea in your head. It's about a plan you are considering. 퇴사할 생각이에요. (Quitting is on my mind.)
-(으)려고 하다: Implies a stronger intention, often with some preparatory action or a more concrete decision made. It's closer to "I'm going to..." or "I intend to..." 퇴사하려고 해요. (I've decided to quit and am taking steps.)
-(으)ㄹ 생각이다 vs. -(으)ㄹ 것이다 (거예요/거야)
-(으)ㄹ 생각이다: Specifically expresses an intention or plan. It reveals your thought process.
-(으)ㄹ 것이다: Is a more general future tense marker. It can state a plan (주말에 영화 볼 거예요), but it can also be used for predictions or assumptions (내일 비가 올 거예요). -(으)ㄹ 생각이다 is only for intentions.
