Core Pattern Rule: Expressing Unawareness with -줄 몰랐어
This pattern is used to express that you were unaware of a certain fact or situation. It translates to "I didn't know that..." or "I had no idea that..." and is often used to show surprise or provide a reason for a misunderstanding.
Formation
The pattern attaches to verb and adjective stems, as well as nouns.
Adjective Stems: -(으)ㄴ 줄 몰랐어
Vowel stem: 비싸다 → 비싼 줄 몰랐어
Consonant stem: 좋다 → 좋은 줄 몰랐어
ㄹ stem: 멀다 → 먼 줄 몰랐어
Action Verb Stems (Present Tense): -는 줄 몰랐어
오다 → 오는 줄 몰랐어
먹다 → 먹는 줄 몰랐어
Action Verb Stems (Past Tense): -(으)ㄴ 줄 몰랐어
오다 → 온 줄 몰랐어 (I didn't know you had come)
닫다 → 닫은 줄 몰랐어

Handling Tense and Word Type
The connector before 줄 몰랐어 changes depending on the word type (adjective vs. verb) and the tense of the clause. This is the trickiest part of the pattern.
Describing a Current State (Adjectives & Nouns)
Use -(으)ㄴ 줄 for adjectives and -(이)ㄴ 줄 for nouns to talk about a state you just became aware of.
Adjective: 이렇게 먼 줄 몰랐어. (I didn't know it was this far.)
Noun: 오늘인 줄 몰랐어. (I didn't know it was today.)
Describing an Ongoing Action (Present Tense Verbs)
Use -는 줄 for an action that is currently happening.
Verb: 기다리는 줄 몰랐어. (I didn't know you were waiting.)
Describing a Past Action or Resulting State (Past Tense Verbs)
Use -(으)ㄴ 줄 for an action that has already finished or a state that resulted from a past action.
Verb: 문 닫은 줄 몰랐어. (I didn't know it had closed.)
