Core Pattern Rule: -(이)라면서?

This pattern is used to confirm information you've heard from someone else. It's similar to saying "I heard that..." or "Is it true that...?" in English, and often carries a nuance of surprise, curiosity, or even a gentle challenge.

Formation

The ending changes based on the word type and whether it ends in a vowel or consonant.

Nouns (vowel ending) + -라면서?

의사 (doctor) → 의사라면서?

공짜 (free) → 공짜라면서?

Nouns (consonant ending) + -이라면서?

학생 (student) → 학생이라면서?

생일 (birthday) → 생일이라면서?

Verbs (present tense) + -ㄴ/는다면서?

하다 (to do) → 한다면서?

떠나다 (to leave) → 떠난다면서?

Verbs (past tense) + -았다면서? / -었다면서?

되다 (to become) → 됐다면서? (short for 되었다면서?)

Adjectives + -다면서?

예쁘다 (to be pretty) → 예쁘다면서?

너 로또 됐다면서? / 다이어트한다면서? / 학생이라면서? / 생일이라면서?

Native Nuance & Context

Beyond simple confirmation, -(이)라면서? carries specific social nuances.

Tone of Surprise or Teasing

This pattern is rarely a neutral question. It's often used to express surprise about the news you heard, or to playfully tease someone. For example, saying 다이어트한다면서? to a friend eating a donut is a classic teasing use.

Confirming Rumors or Gossip

It strongly implies that the information is secondhand. You're checking a rumor or something you were told by a third party. You wouldn't use it to ask about something you are witnessing directly.

Awkward: Seeing a friend study and asking 공부한다면서? (I heard you're studying?)

Natural: Seeing a friend study and asking 공부해? (Are you studying?)

Gentle Confrontation

In some contexts, it can be used to gently confront someone about something you heard they said or did. The tone of voice is key here.

Example: 이거 거짓말이라면서? 왜 나한테는 사실대로 말 안 했어? (I heard this is a lie. Why didn't you tell me the truth?)

다이어트한다면서 케이크는 왜 먹어? / 내일 떠난다면서요? / 1등이라면서? 축하해!

Politeness & Formality

This pattern can be easily adjusted for politeness by adding or removing 요 at the end. The script for this lesson provides clear pairs for practice.

Casual Form: -(이)라면서?

Use this form (반말) with close friends, family members, or people younger than you. It's informal and direct.

Example: 너 로또 됐다면서? (I heard you won the lottery?)

Polite Form: -(이)라면서요?

Add 요 to make the standard polite form (해요체). Use this with colleagues, acquaintances, older people, or in any situation requiring respect.

Example: 호리 씨 로또 됐다면서요? (Hori, I heard you won the lottery?)

네가 쏜다면서? / 호리 씨가 쏜다면서요? / 친구라면서? / 친구라면서요?
