Core Pattern Rule: -치고는 (Considering...)
This pattern is used to express that a situation or result is different from what one would normally expect from the standard mentioned.
Meaning & Usage
Meaning: It translates to "for a...", "considering that...", or "as for a...".
When to use: Use it when you want to highlight that something is surprisingly good, bad, big, small, etc., given the category it belongs to. The outcome subverts the general expectation.
Formation
Simply attach -치고는 directly to a noun, regardless of whether it ends in a vowel or a consonant.
Noun ending in vowel: 나이 + 치고는 → 나이치고는 (for one's age)
Noun ending in consonant: 겨울 + 치고는 → 겨울치고는 (for winter)
It can also attach to noun phrases created with -는 것 or -은/ㄴ 것.
Verb phrase: 처음 한 것 + 치고는 → 처음 한 것치고는 (considering it was the first time)
겨울치고는 따뜻해요. / 가격치고는 퀄리티가 별로예요. / 처음 한 것치고는 잘했네요.
Native Nuance: Subverting Expectations
The core feeling of -치고는 is surprise or pointing out an exception to a rule or stereotype. It's not for stating something that is expected.
Unexpected Outcomes
This pattern is perfect for situations that go against the norm. The outcome can be positive or negative.
Positive Surprise: 외국인치고는 한국말을 잘해요. (He speaks Korean well for a foreigner.) The expectation might be a lower level of fluency.
Negative Surprise: 유명한 것치고는 별로예요. (It's not that great considering how famous it is.) The expectation was high quality due to its fame.
Common Mistake to Avoid
Do not use -치고는 for expected outcomes. For example, saying 겨울치고는 추워요 (It's cold for winter) is unnatural because cold weather is the expectation for winter. You would simply say 겨울이라서 추워요 (It's cold because it's winter). The pattern is reserved for the unexpected, like 겨울치고는 따뜻해요.
외국인치고는 한국말을 잘해요. / 유명한 것치고는 별로예요. / 남자 방치고는 깨끗해. / 급하게 만든 것치고는 맛있어요.
Politeness & Formality
The pattern -치고는 itself does not change based on politeness. The formality of the entire sentence is determined by the verb ending that follows.

Polite Language (해요체)

호리 씨치고는 일찍 왔네요. (You're early for you, Hori.)
싼 것치고는 튼튼해요. (It's sturdy for something cheap.)
초보자치고는 잘 쳐. / 초보자치고는 잘 쳐요. / 나이치고는 어려 보여. / 나이치고는 어려 보여요.
