The pattern -게 is a versatile connector that attaches to verb and adjective stems. It has two primary functions.
Expressing Purpose ("so that")
This is the most common usage. The first clause states the goal or desired result, and the second clause states the action taken to achieve it.
Structure: [Goal Clause] + -게 + [Action Clause]
Example: 늦지 않게 (so that I'm not late) + 빨리 와 (come quickly).
Creating Adverbs ("-ly")
When attached to an adjective stem, -게 turns it into an adverb that describes how an action is performed. This is similar to adding "-ly" in English.
Example: 맛있다 (to be delicious) → 맛있게 (deliciously). 맛있게 먹다 means "to eat deliciously/enjoyably."
Formation Rule
Simply attach -게 to the verb or adjective stem, regardless of whether it ends in a vowel or a consonant.

Formation
The structure is [Verb Stem] + -지 않게.
잊어버리다 (to forget) → 잊어버리지 않게 (so as not to forget)
상하다 (to spoil) → 상하지 않게 (so it doesn't spoil)
다치다 (to get hurt) → 다치지 않게 (so you don't get hurt)

Key Differences
Emphasis: -도록 can feel slightly stronger or more formal, often appearing in written instructions or when emphasizing the importance of the goal.
Extent ("Until"): -도록 can also mean "to the point that..." or "until..." In this usage, -게 cannot be used. For example: 목이 아프도록 노래했어요. (I sang until my throat hurt.)
Adverbs: Only -게 is used to turn simple adjectives into adverbs. You say 예쁘게 (prettily), not 예쁘도록.
다 볼 수 있게 거기 뒀어요. / 아이들이 볼 수 있도록 책을 낮은 곳에 두었어요. / 춥지 않게 따뜻하게 입으세요.
Politeness & Formality
The -게 ending itself is neutral; it doesn't carry any specific level of politeness. The overall formality of the sentence is determined by the final verb ending in the second clause.
