Core Pattern Rule: Using -처럼 / -같이 for Similes
The particles -처럼 and -같이 both attach directly to nouns to mean "like [Noun]" or "as [Noun]". They are used to create similes, comparing the subject's state or action to the noun.
Formation
Simply attach -처럼 or -같이 to the end of a noun. There are no changes based on whether the noun ends in a vowel or a consonant.
Noun + 처럼: 영화배우 (movie star) → 영화배우처럼 (like a movie star)
Noun + 같이: 바보 (fool) → 바보같이 (like a fool)
Usage
These particles are placed after the noun of comparison and are followed by a verb or adjective that describes the action or state.
Comparing Actions: 소같이 일해요. (I work like an ox.)
Comparing Appearance/State: 그림같이 아름다워요. (It's beautiful like a painting.)
영화배우처럼 입었네. / 나는 회사에서 소같이 일해. / 꿀같이 달콤해. / 프로처럼 해.
Synonyms & Differences: -처럼 vs. -같이
In most everyday conversations, -처럼 and -같이 are interchangeable. However, there are subtle nuances that distinguish them.
Interchangeable Usage
For most simple comparisons, you can use either one without a significant change in meaning.
영화배우처럼 입었다 is very similar to 영화배우같이 입었다.
꿀처럼 달콤하다 is the same as 꿀같이 달콤하다.
Subtle Nuances
-처럼 (cheoreom): Often focuses on external similarity, appearance, or a direct comparison of qualities. It can sometimes feel slightly more objective or even literary.
-같이 (gachi): Can carry a stronger feeling of being "one and the same" or acting in the same manner. It's very common in established idioms and proverbs. For example, 가족같이 지내다 (to live like family) implies a deep, shared bond, not just an external resemblance. 같이 also has the separate meaning of "together" (함께).
Tip: When you're unsure, -처럼 is often a safe choice for direct comparisons. For idiomatic phrases, it's best to learn them as set expressions, like 귀신같이 알아맞히다 (to guess with ghostly accuracy).
개처럼 벌어서 정승처럼 써라. / 귀신같이 알아맞히네. / 가족같이 지내요. / 그림같이 아름다워.
Politeness & Formality
The particles -처럼 and -같이 themselves do not change for politeness. The formality of your sentence is determined entirely by the verb ending that follows.
This lesson's script provides many examples of switching between casual speech (반말) and standard polite speech (해요체).
Casual vs. Polite Commands
Casual (반말): 바보같이 굴지 마. (Don't act like a fool.)
Polite (해요체): 바보같이 굴지 마세요. (Please don't act like a fool.)
Casual vs. Polite Statements
Casual (반말): 귀신같이 알아맞히네. (You guess it like a ghost!)
Polite (해요체): 귀신같이 알아맞히네요. (You guess it like a ghost!)
Notice how only the final verb ending changes (-마 vs. -마세요, -네 vs. -네요) while 바보같이 and 귀신같이 remain the same.
애처럼 굴지 마. / 애처럼 굴지 마세요. / 가족같이 지내. / 가족같이 지내요. / 거짓말같이 사라졌어. / 거짓말같이 사라졌어요.
