Core Pattern Rule: -기보다는 (Rather than...)
This pattern is used to contrast two actions or states, expressing a preference for the second one. It's equivalent to saying "rather than doing X, I'll do Y" or "instead of X, Y is better."
Meaning & Usage
Meaning: It marks the less-preferred option in a comparison. The clause that follows presents the preferred or suggested alternative.
When to use: Use it when you want to gently reject one course of action and propose another, state a personal preference, or give advice by comparing two options.
Formation
Simply attach -기보다는 to the stem of any verb or adjective. The first part, -기, is a nominalizer that turns the verb/adjective into a noun-like concept.
Verb stem: 공부하다 (to study) → 공부하기 + 보다는 → 공부하기보다는 (Rather than studying)
Adjective stem: 예쁘다 (to be pretty) → 예쁘기 + 보다는 → 예쁘기보다는 (Rather than being pretty)
공부하기보다는 놀고 싶어. / 포기하기보다는 도전해. / 예쁘기보다는 귀여워.
Synonyms & Differences: -지 말고 vs. -는 것보다
While -기보다는 expresses a preference, learners often confuse it with similar-looking patterns.
-기보다는 vs. -지 말고
-기보다는 is for suggesting a better alternative or stating a preference. It's a soft comparison.
걱정하기보다는 준비해. (Rather than worrying, prepare. - This is a good alternative.)
-지 말고 is a stronger negative command. It means "Don't do X, and do Y instead." It's more direct and less about preference.
걱정하지 말고 준비해. (Don't worry, prepare instead. - Stop the act of worrying.)
-기보다는 vs. -는 것보다
These two are very similar and often interchangeable. However, there's a slight nuance.
-기보다는 often carries the feeling of choosing a course of action. It's about what one should do or wants to do.
-는 것보다 is often used for more objective, factual comparisons. It simply states that one thing is 'more' than another.
만들기보다는 사는 게 편해. (Suggests buying is the better action to take.)
