Core Pattern Rule: Expressing Likelihood and Plausibility
This pattern, -을/ㄹ 법하다, is used to express that a certain action or state is reasonably likely, plausible, or natural given the circumstances. It implies a stronger basis for judgment than a simple guess like -을 것 같다 (it seems like).
Meaning & Usage
Meaning: "is likely to...", "is plausible that...", "it's understandable that...", "it's natural to..."
When to use: Use it when you assess a situation and conclude that an outcome is quite possible or that a certain reaction is justified.
Formation
It attaches to verb and adjective stems.
Stems ending in a vowel or ㄹ: Add -ㄹ 법하다.
오다 (to come) → 올 법하다
그렇다 (to be so) → 그럴 법하다
알다 (to know) → 알 법하다 (ㄹ is not dropped)
Stems ending in a consonant: Add -을 법하다.
있다 (to exist) → 있을 법하다
믿다 (to believe) → 믿을 법하다
It can be used to describe a noun by changing to the -은/ㄴ form: -을/ㄹ 법한 + Noun.
그럴 법한 이야기네. / 있을 법한 일이야. / 믿을 법한 거짓말이야.
Nuance: Plausible vs. Understandable
While -을/ㄹ 법하다 broadly means 'likely', it carries two distinct nuances depending on the context.
Plausibility & Likelihood
This is used when judging the probability of an event or the believability of a statement. It suggests there's a good reason to think something might happen or be true.
Context: Assessing a future outcome or a story's credibility.
Example: 그 사람은 성공할 법해. (He is likely to succeed.) This implies he has the skills or conditions for success.
Example: 어딘가에 있을 법해. (It's likely to exist somewhere.)
Natural & Understandable
This usage acknowledges that a person's action or feeling is a natural, justified, or reasonable response to a situation.
Context: Empathizing with or explaining someone's behavior.
Example: 화낼 법도 한데 참았어요. (It would have been natural to get angry, but he held it in.)
Example: 잊어버릴 법해요. (It's understandable that you forgot.)
Adding the particle 도 as in -을 법도 하다 often emphasizes this 'understandable' or 'natural' nuance.
그 사람은 성공할 법해요. / 화낼 법도 한데 참았어. / 잊어버릴 법해.
Politeness & Formality
The pattern -을/ㄹ 법하다 conjugates like any other 하다 adjective, making it easy to switch between politeness levels.
Casual Speech (반말)
For friends or people younger than you, use the -아/어 form.
하다 becomes 해.
Examples: 비가 올 법해., 충분히 오해할 법해.
Polite Speech (해요체)
For general polite conversation, use the -아요/어요 form.
하다 becomes 해요.
Examples: 비가 올 법해요., 충분히 오해할 법해요.
Negative Questions
The pattern is also common in negative questions to seek agreement.
Casual: 믿을 법하지 않아? (Doesn't it seem believable?)
Polite: 믿을 법하지 않아요? (Doesn't it seem believable?)
충분히 오해할 법해. / 충분히 오해할 법해요. / 믿을 법하지 않아? / 믿을 법하지 않아요?
