Formation

This pattern attaches to verb and adjective stems, or to nouns.

Verbs/Adjectives ending in a vowel or ㄹ: Add -ㄹ 뿐이다.

하다 (to do) → 할 뿐이다

만들다 (to make) → 만들 뿐이다

Verbs/Adjectives ending in a consonant: Add -을 뿐이다.

먹다 (to eat) → 먹을 뿐이다

Nouns: Add -(이)ㄹ 뿐이다.

친구 (friend) → 친구일 뿐이다

장난 (joke) → 장난일 뿐이다

Past Tense: Attach to the past tense stem -았/었- to form -았/었을 뿐이다.

했다 (did) → 했을 뿐이다

-기만 하다: Repetition & Exclusivity

This pattern emphasizes that an action is done repeatedly or exclusively, often with a neutral or slightly complaining tone. It means "to do nothing but [verb]."

Context: Describing someone's limited behavior.

You say: 그는 하루 종일 게임만 해요. (He does nothing but play games all day.)

Using -기만 하다 where -(으)ㄹ 뿐이다 fits would sound unnatural. For example, 가볍게 만지기만 했어 would imply you repeatedly touched it lightly and did nothing else, which is a different meaning.

궁금해서 물어봤을 뿐이야. / 시키는 대로 했을 뿐이야. / 재밌어서 웃었을 뿐이야.

The adverb 그냥 (geunyang) is a very common partner for -(으)ㄹ 뿐이다. While -(으)ㄹ 뿐이다 already means "just," adding 그냥 strengthens this feeling and adds a nuance of spontaneity or lack of a specific reason.
