Core Pattern Rule: Expressing "Only" with -밖에 없다
The pattern -밖에 없다 is used to express the idea of "only" or "nothing but." It emphasizes that there is no other option, quantity, or possibility aside from the noun it's attached to.
Formation
Attach -밖에 directly to a noun, regardless of whether it ends in a vowel or a consonant.
Noun ending in vowel: 너 -> 너밖에
Noun ending in consonant: 돈 -> 돈밖에
Key Usage Rule
The most important rule is that -밖에 must be followed by a negative predicate (like 없다, 안 하다, 못 하다, 모르다). Even though the English translation is positive ("only"), the Korean sentence structure is negative.
너밖에 없어. (Literally: "Outside of you, doesn't exist." -> Meaning: "You're the only one.")
물밖에 없어. (Literally: "Outside of water, doesn't exist." -> Meaning: "There's nothing but water.")
너밖에 없어. / 돈밖에 없어. / 방법이 이것밖에 없어. / 마실 게 물밖에 없어.
The Golden Rule: Always Use a Negative Verb
This is the most critical concept for using -밖에 correctly. It sets up a negative expectation that must be completed with a negative verb or adjective. Using it with a positive verb is grammatically incorrect.
Common Negative Partners
없다: to not have / not exist
돈이 5,000원밖에 없어요. (I only have 5,000 won.)
안 + Verb: to not do (negation of action)
한 명밖에 안 왔어요. (Only one person came.)
못 + Verb: cannot do (negation of ability/possibility)
이것밖에 못 해요. (I can only do this much.)
모르다: to not know
1번밖에 몰라요. (I only know number 1.)
Incorrect Usage:
*돈이 5,000원밖에 있어요. (Incorrect)
*한 명밖에 왔어요. (Incorrect)
한 명밖에 안 왔어. / 한 번밖에 못 봤어. / 한 시간밖에 못 잤어. / 이것밖에 못 해.
