Core Pattern Rule: Expressing No Other Choice
This pattern, -을/ㄹ 수밖에 없다, is used to express that there is no other option available or that a certain outcome is inevitable and natural.
Meaning & Usage
It has two closely related meanings:
No other choice: Used when circumstances force a single course of action. It literally means "there is no way outside of doing (verb)."
Inevitable outcome: Used when a result is so natural or logical that it's unavoidable. This is often translated as "can't help but..." or "bound to..."
Formation
Attach it directly to a verb stem.
Verb stems ending in a vowel or ㄹ: Add -ㄹ 수밖에 없다.
가다 → 갈 수밖에 없다
만들다 → 만들 수밖에 없다
Verb stems ending in a consonant: Add -을 수밖에 없다.
먹다 → 먹을 수밖에 없다
For nouns, use -(이)ㄹ 수밖에 없다.
범인 → 범인일 수밖에 없다
버스가 없어서 걸을 수밖에 없어. / 노력하면 성공할 수밖에 없어. / 그 남자가 범인일 수밖에 없어.
Using Past Tense and Modifying Nouns
This pattern is flexible and can be used in the past tense or to describe a noun.
Past Tense
To talk about a past situation where you had no choice, change 없다 to 없었다.
Casual: -을/ㄹ 수밖에 없었어
Polite: -을/ㄹ 수밖에 없었어요
This shows that the inevitability or lack of options occurred in the past.
Modifying Nouns
You can also use this pattern to describe a noun as something that is "bound to happen" or "unavoidable."
Form: -을/ㄹ 수밖에 없는 + Noun
This structure turns the entire phrase into an adjective describing the noun that follows.
배고파서 먹을 수밖에 없었어. / 너무 아파서 울 수밖에 없었어요. / 일어날 수밖에 없는 일이었어.
