-(으)ㄹ게요 is used to express the speaker's intention, will, or promise to do something. It's a first-person statement about a future action that is directly related to the listener.

Meaning & Usage

Meaning: It translates to "I will..." or "I'll..." but carries the nuance of a promise or a decision made in response to the current situation or conversation.

When to use: Use it when you decide to do something at the moment of speaking, often as a response to someone else. For example, if someone says they're busy, you might respond, "제가 도와줄게요" (I'll help you).

Formation

This pattern attaches directly to verb stems.

Vowel or ㄹ ending stem + -ㄹ게요:

가다 (to go) → 갈게요

만들다 (to make) → 만들게요

Consonant ending stem + -을게요:

먹다 (to eat) → 먹을게요

찾다 (to find) → 찾을게요

내가 다 할게. / 금방 갈게요. / 비밀 지킬게요. / 나중에 전화할게요.

The most important nuance of -(으)ㄹ게요 is that it's listener-oriented. The speaker's action is presented with the listener's awareness, reaction, or situation in mind. This is why it's almost exclusively used with a first-person subject (나/저).

Key Points:

First-Person Only: You can say 제가 할게요 (I'll do it), but you cannot say 그가 할게요 (He'll do it). For other subjects, you must use a different future tense like -(으)ㄹ 거예요.

Implied Connection: Using -(으)ㄹ게요 shows that your decision is connected to the conversation. 생각해 볼게요 ("I'll think about it") implies "...because you suggested it." 제가 설명할게요 ("I'll explain") implies "...since you seem to be wondering."

Seeking Acknowledgment: It has a softer feel than a blunt statement of fact. It subtly seeks the listener's acknowledgment or approval of your intended action.
