Core Pattern Rule: Framing a Statement with -자면

The pattern -자면 is used to introduce a statement by first setting up a hypothetical condition, perspective, or action. It's a contraction of the longer form -자고 하면, which means "if one says let's..." or "if one proposes to...". In practice, it functions like saying "If I were to...", "If we're talking about...", or "From the perspective of..." in English.

Formation

Attach -자면 directly to the stem of an action verb, regardless of whether it ends in a vowel or a consonant.

말하다 (to speak) → 말하 + 자면 → 말하자면

보다 (to see/look) → 보 + 자면 → 보자면

듣다 (to listen/hear) → 듣 + 자면 → 듣자면

Usage

This pattern is most often used to preface an opinion, summary, or example. It signals to the listener the specific lens through which they should interpret the following clause.

솔직히 말하자면 별로야. / 결과만 보자면 성공이야. / 과거를 돌아보자면 행복했어.

Common Combinations: Set Phrases

While -자면 can be used with many verbs, it frequently appears in set phrases that function like adverbs to introduce a sentence. Mastering these common combinations will make your Korean sound much more natural.

솔직히 말하자면: To be honest / Frankly speaking

간단히 말하자면: To put it simply / In short

한마디로 말하자면: In a nutshell / In one word

결론을 말하자면: In conclusion / To conclude

예를 들자면: For example / For instance

엄밀히 따지자면: Strictly speaking / Technically

하나 더 덧붙이자면: To add one more thing / In addition

These phrases are extremely useful for structuring your thoughts in conversation, presentations, or writing.

솔직히 말하자면 별로예요. / 예를 들자면 당신 같은 사람이에요. / 엄밀히 따지자면 틀린 말이에요. / 하나 더 덧붙이자면 가격이 비싸요.

Synonyms & Differences: -자면 vs. -(으)려면

Learners often confuse -자면 with -(으)려면 because they both express a type of condition. However, their functions are quite different.

-(으)려면: If you intend to... (Goal)

-(으)려면 expresses an intention or a goal. The main clause then states the action or condition necessary to achieve that goal.

Meaning: "If you want to...", "In order to..."

Example: 한국어를 잘하려면 매일 공부해야 해요. (If you want to be good at Korean, you have to study every day.)

-자면: If one were to... (Perspective)

-자면 sets up a hypothetical situation or a specific viewpoint from which to make a statement. It's not about achieving a goal, but about framing the information that follows.

Meaning: "If we're talking about...", "From the perspective of..."

Example: 결과만 보자면 성공이에요. (If we were to look only at the results, it's a success.)

In short, use -(으)려면 for goals and requirements, and -자면 for perspectives and premises.

다시 하자면 못 할 것 같아요. / 영화로 치자면 이런 거예요. / 처음부터 이야기하자면 길어요.

Politeness & Formality

The -자면 clause itself is neutral in terms of politeness. The overall formality of the sentence is determined by the ending of the main clause that follows it.

Casual Language (반말)

Use casual endings like -야, -이야, or -어/아 when speaking to close friends or people younger than you.

결론을 말하자면 네 탓이야. (To conclude, it's your fault.)

Polite Language (해요체)

Use polite endings like -예요, -이에요, or -어요/아요 for most everyday conversations with adults, colleagues, or people you don't know well.

결론을 말하자면 당신 탓이에요. (To conclude, it is your fault.)

Notice how the script lines consistently provide both a casual and a polite version of the same idea.

다시 하자면 못 할 것 같아. / 다시 하자면 못 할 것 같아요. / 한마디로 말하자면 좋아. / 한마디로 말하자면 좋아요.
