The Basic Present Tense
The basic present form ( -아요/-어요 ) is very versatile. It is typically used to express general facts, daily habits, or routines.
Daily Habits
매일 운동해요. (I exercise every day.)
한국어를 공부해요. (I study Korean.)
When you describe something you do regularly, the basic present is the natural choice.
The Present Progressive
To strongly emphasize that an action is happening right in the middle of this moment , use -고 있어요 .
Right Now
지금 운동하고 있어요. (I am exercising right now.)
지금 한국어를 공부하고 있어요. (I am studying Korean right now.)
This form acts like a spotlight on the progress of the action.
Comparing the Two
Basic Present (Habit) · Progressive (Right Now)
매일 운동해요.
I exercise every day. · 지금 운동하고 있어요.
I am exercising right now.
한국어를 공부해요.
I study Korean. · 지금 한국어를 공부하고 있어요.
I am studying Korean right now.
Overlapping Usage
Can you use the basic present for things happening right now? Yes!
Korean does not strictly divide these two forms. You can easily say 지금 집에 가요. (I am going home now) using the basic present.
If you want to emphasize that you are currently in transit and in the middle of the action, you can switch to 지금 집에 가고 있어요. (I am on my way home now). Both are perfectly natural and common.
Adjectives and States
Adjectives (descriptive verbs) describe how things are , not what they do . Because they describe a state of being, they naturally use the basic present form.
Describing States
지금 바빠요. (I am busy right now.)
