Event vs. Experience
When talking about the past, we choose between two main ideas: did a specific event happen at a certain time, or have you ever experienced something in your life?
We use -았/었어요 for specific events and -아/어 본 적이 있어요 for life experiences.
Specific Past Events
The standard past tense -았/었어요 focuses on factual events that happened at a specific time.
Specific Information
It is often used with specific time words like yesterday (어제), last year (작년), or this morning (오늘 아침).
I ate kimchi yesterday.
I went to Jeju Island last year.
Life Experiences
-아/어 본 적이 있어요 means "to have the experience of doing something." It focuses on whether you have ever done an action in your life up to now.
Focus on the Experience
The exact time it happened is not important.
I have eaten kimchi before.
I have been to Jeju Island.
Side-by-Side Comparison
Let's compare the same action.
I ate kimchi yesterday. ·
I have eaten kimchi before.
