Three Ways to Talk About the Future
Korean has several ways to talk about future events. Instead of memorizing them as strict rules, it helps to understand what the speaker wants to emphasize.
In this lesson, we will compare three common patterns for future actions: the present tense, -(으)ㄹ 거예요 , and -려고 해요 .
Present Tense for Fixed Schedules
You can use the standard present tense ( -아요/-어요 ) to talk about the future if the event is a fixed schedule or certain to happen.
Fixed Schedules
When you add a future time word like "tomorrow" or "next month," the present tense feels like a scheduled fact.
내일 아홉 시에 출발해요
I am departing at nine tomorrow.
다음 달에 이사해요
I am moving next month.
-(으)ㄹ 거예요 for Plans and Expectations
The most common future expression is -(으)ㄹ 거예요 . It simply states your plan or what you expect to happen.
General Plans
Use this when you have decided to do something, but it might not be as rigidly fixed as a schedule.
내일 일찍 출발할 거예요
I will depart early tomorrow.
다음 달에 이사할 거예요
I will move next month.
-려고 해요 for Intentions
The pattern -려고 해요 focuses on your personal intention, thought, or a plan you are currently preparing for.
Intentions and Preparations
It often translates to "I intend to" or "I am planning to." It shows what is in your mind rather than a finalized fact.
일찍 출발하려고 해요
I intend to depart early.
이사하려고 집을 알아보고 있어요
I am looking for a house because I intend to move.
