Overview
The particle -(으)로 is a fundamental case marker in Korean that serves multiple functions, primarily indicating method, means, material, direction, or selection. It attaches to nouns and pronouns to specify how, with what, from what, or towards where an action takes place.
Usage
-(으)로 is highly versatile and can be used in several contexts:
- Method, Means, or Tool: It indicates the way, method, or tool used to perform an action. This is equivalent to "by" or "with" in English.
- Example: 버스로 가요 (go by bus), 젓가락으로 먹어요 (eat with chopsticks).
- Material or Ingredient: It specifies the material or ingredient something is made of or used as.
- Example: 나무로 만든 의자 (a chair made of wood), 콩으로 만든 두부 (tofu made from soybeans).
- Direction or Destination: It marks the direction or destination towards which movement or action occurs. It implies movement towards a general area or specific place.
- Example: 학교로 가요 (go to/towards school), 오른쪽으로 도세요 (turn to the right).
- Status or Role: It can indicate a status, role, or capacity in which someone or something acts, often translated as "as" or "in the capacity of."
- Example: 친구로서 도와줬어요 (helped as a friend), 선생님으로 일해요 (work as a teacher).
- Selection or Choice: When choosing one option out of several, it can indicate the selected item or option.
- Example: 커피로 주세요 (Please give me coffee [out of the options]), 이걸로 할게요 (I'll take this one).
Conjugation Rules
The form of -(으)로 depends on the final sound of the preceding noun:
- If the noun ends in a consonant (except ㄹ): use -으로
- Example: 집 + 으로 → 집으로 (to home)
- Example: 연필 + 으로 → 연필으로 (with a pencil)
- If the noun ends in a vowel or the consonant ㄹ: use -로
- Example: 학교 + 로 → 학교로 (to school)
- Example: 버스 + 로 → 버스로 (by bus)
- Example: 서울 + 로 → 서울로 (to Seoul)
Knowledge Plus
- While -(으)로 can indicate direction, it often implies a general direction or path rather than a precise destination. For a more specific, fixed destination, -에 is often used. For example,
서울역으로 가요 (going towards Seoul Station, could be passing by) vs. 서울역에 가요 (going to Seoul Station, the destination).
- When indicating the material something is made of, -(으)로 is often paired with verbs like 만들다 (to make) or 되다 (to become/be made of).
- It's also used in expressions like
말로 (by word/verbally), 몸으로 (with one's body/physically), 마음으로 (with one's heart/mentally).
- When used with adverbs of direction (e.g., 이쪽, 저쪽, 어디), it forms
이쪽으로, 저쪽으로, 어디로.
