(으)려고 하다 is a widely used grammatical construction in Korean that expresses the speaker's intention or plan to perform an action. It signifies a decision or a resolve to do something in the future, often implying a degree of thought or preparation behind the action.
This expression is attached to verb stems and is primarily used to convey the speaker's own intentions. It can also be used in questions to inquire about another person's intentions or plans. Unlike simple future tense endings like -(으)ㄹ 거예요, which can merely state a future event, (으)려고 하다 specifically highlights the intention or will of the subject.
It is always followed by the verb 하다 (to do), which is then conjugated according to tense, politeness level, etc. (e.g., 하려고 해요, 하려고 합니다, 하려고 했어요).
The choice between -으려고 하다 and -려고 하다 depends on the final sound of the verb stem:
Verb stem ends in a vowel or ㄹ: Attach -려고 하다.
Verb stem ends in a consonant (other than ㄹ): Attach -으려고 하다.
