The grammatical construction -아/어 내다 is an auxiliary verb expression that attaches to the stem of an action verb. It signifies that an action, which was difficult, challenging, or required significant effort and perseverance, was successfully completed or brought to fruition. It emphasizes the struggle involved in the process and the eventual triumph over obstacles.
-아/어 내다 is used when the speaker wants to highlight the arduous nature of an action and the successful completion despite that difficulty. It conveys a sense of achievement, relief, or satisfaction from having overcome a tough situation or task. It's often used with verbs that imply a process of struggle, endurance, or problem-solving, such as 참다 (to endure), 이기다 (to win/overcome), 해내다 (to accomplish), 찾아내다 (to find out/discover), 생각해내다 (to come up with an idea).
This expression is particularly useful when you want to convey that something wasn't just done, but 'managed to be done' or 'was pulled off' through sheer will or effort. It adds a layer of meaning beyond simple completion, focusing on the journey and the effort expended.
-아/어 내다 follows the standard 아/어 conjugation rules for verbs:
If the last vowel of the verb stem is ㅏ or ㅗ, attach -아 내다.
If the last vowel of the verb stem is anything other than ㅏ or ㅗ, or if the stem ends in a consonant, attach -어 내다.
If the verb stem ends in 하다, it becomes -하여 내다, which commonly shortens to -해 내다.
While other expressions like -고 말다 (ending up doing, often with regret or unintended outcome) or -어 버리다 (completing entirely, sometimes with regret or relief) also indicate completion, -아/어 내다 specifically emphasizes the difficulty and the successful overcoming of that difficulty. It carries a strong connotation of perseverance and a positive outcome despite the challenges. It can be applied to both physical and mental efforts, highlighting the 'bringing out' or 'producing' of a result through hard work. This makes it a powerful expression for conveying resilience and achievement.
