Overview
The connective ending -(으)며 is a versatile grammatical tool used to express simultaneous actions or to list multiple actions, states, facts, or items. It functions similarly to "while," "as," or "and" in English, often carrying a slightly more formal or literary tone than the more common -고.
Usage
1. Expressing Simultaneous Actions
-(으)며 is primarily used to connect two or more verbs where the actions occur at the same time or overlap. The subject of both clauses is typically the same.
- Example: 그는 음악을 들으며 공부했어요. (He studied while listening to music.)
- Here, listening to music and studying happen concurrently.
2. Listing Actions, States, or Facts
This ending can also be used to list multiple actions, states, or facts that are related, often providing additional information or characteristics. It can connect verbs and adjectives.
- Example: 이 식당은 음식이 맛있으며 가격도 저렴해요. (This restaurant's food is delicious, and the prices are also cheap.)
- Here, two positive characteristics of the restaurant are listed.
- Example: 그는 똑똑하며 성실한 학생입니다. (He is a smart and diligent student.)
- Used with adjectives to list qualities.
3. Listing Nouns or Clauses (More Formal/Literary)
In more formal or written contexts, -(으)며 can be used to list multiple nouns or clauses, functioning much like "and" or "as well as." This usage is less common in everyday spoken Korean.
- Example: 우리 회사는 기술 개발에 힘쓰며, 고객 만족을 최우선으로 합니다. (Our company strives for technological development, and prioritizes customer satisfaction.)
- Listing two main objectives of the company.
Conjugation Rules
The conjugation of -(으)며 depends on the final sound of the verb or adjective stem:
- Vowel Stem: Attach -며
- 가다 (to go) -> 가 + 며 -> 가며
- 보다 (to see) -> 보 + 며 -> 보며
- Consonant Stem (excluding 'ㄹ'): Attach -으며
- 먹다 (to eat) -> 먹 + 으며 -> 먹으며
- 읽다 (to read) -> 읽 + 으며 -> 읽으며
- Consonant Stem ending in 'ㄹ': Drop 'ㄹ' and attach -며
- 살다 (to live) -> 사 + 며 -> 사며
- 만들다 (to make) -> 만드 + 며 -> 만드며
Knowledge Plus
- Formality and Nuance: While -고 can also list actions or states, -(으)며 often implies a closer connection or more continuous overlap between the actions. It tends to be more common in written language, formal speech, or descriptive contexts. When simply listing sequential actions or unrelated facts, -고 is usually preferred.
- Subject Agreement: For simultaneous actions, the subject of both clauses connected by -(으)며 must be the same.
- Tense and Politeness: Tense and politeness are expressed in the final clause of the sentence.
