The grammatical construction 아/어 드리다 is an auxiliary verb expression used to indicate that the speaker (or the subject of the main verb) performs an action for the benefit of another person. It specifically conveys a sense of offering a favor, service, or assistance to someone who is a superior, elder, or someone deserving of respect.
This expression is the honorific equivalent of 아/어 주다, which is used for general or non-honorific contexts. The verb 드리다 itself is the honorific form of 주다 (to give).
아/어 드리다 is used when the action performed by the speaker (or the subject) is directed towards and benefits a third person or the listener, and that person is someone to whom the speaker wishes to show respect. This includes elders, superiors, customers, or anyone in a formal setting where politeness is paramount.
It emphasizes the benefactive nature of the action, meaning the action is done for someone. The nuance is one of polite service, helpfulness, or respectful offering. For example, if you are carrying someone's bag, opening a door for them, or explaining something to them, and that person is your boss or an elderly individual, you would use 아/어 드리다.
It can also be used in polite requests, such as "~아/어 드려도 될까요?" (May I do [action] for you?).
아/어 드리다 attaches to the verb stem following the standard 아/어 conjugation rules:
If the verb stem's last vowel is ㅏ or ㅗ, attach -아 드리다.
If the verb stem's last vowel is anything other than ㅏ or ㅗ, or if it ends in a consonant, attach -어 드리다.
If the verb stem ends in -하다, it changes to -해 드리다 (from -하여 드리다).
It is crucial to distinguish 아/어 드리다 from 아/어 주다. While both mean 'to do something for someone', 아/어 드리다 is exclusively used when the recipient of the action is a superior or someone deserving of respect, conveying a higher level of politeness and deference. 아/어 주다 is used in general situations, for peers, subordinates, or when no particular honorific distinction is needed.
Remember that the subject of the verb 드리다 (which is the speaker or the main verb's subject) is performing the action, and the indirect object (the beneficiary) is the person receiving the favor or service. This construction is fundamental for expressing politeness and respect in Korean communication, especially in service industries or when interacting with elders and superiors.
