Contrast & Concession · Whether or not; regardless of whether... or not
The -건 말건 grammar pattern is used to express that a certain outcome or situation will remain the same, regardless of whether a specific action is performed or not. It highlights the speaker's indifference to the choice or the irrelevance of the action's performance to the subsequent event.
This pattern functions to state that something will happen or be true irrespective of a preceding action. It conveys a strong sense of indifference, determination, or resignation, implying that the choice to perform the action (Verb + 건) or not to perform it (말건, from 말다 'to stop/not do') has no bearing on the following clause. It's often used when the speaker wants to emphasize their resolve or when describing an unchangeable reality.
The -건 말건 pattern attaches directly to verb stems.
The first part, -건, attaches to the verb stem. The second part, 말건, is fixed and comes from the verb 말다 (to stop, to not do) combined with -건.

While similar to patterns like -든지 말든지 or -거나 말거나, -건 말건 often carries a slightly stronger nuance of determination or resignation. It's less about offering a genuine choice to someone and more about stating that the choice itself is inconsequential to the speaker's (or the situation's) subsequent action or state. It emphasizes the inevitability or unaffected nature of the following clause. It is primarily used with verbs, but can occasionally be seen with adjectives to express "whether it is X or not."
