Listing & Addition · and, with, together with
-랑/이랑 is a versatile particle in Korean primarily used to connect nouns. It serves two main functions: enumerating items (similar to 'and') and indicating companionship or partnership (similar to 'with'). It is widely used in casual and conversational Korean, making it a very common and natural choice in everyday speech.
Enumeration (and) When used for enumeration, -랑/이랑 connects two or more nouns, listing them as items that share a common relationship or are part of a group. It functions much like the English word 'and' when listing things.
Companionship/Partnership (with) This particle also indicates that an action is performed with someone or something. It specifies the companion or partner involved in an activity. It can often be followed by adverbs like 같이 (together) or 함께 (together) to emphasize the shared nature of the action.
The choice between -랑 and -이랑 depends on whether the preceding noun ends in a vowel or a consonant:
-랑/이랑 is generally considered more informal and conversational than -과/와. While -과/와 can be used in both formal and informal contexts, -랑/이랑 is almost exclusively used in spoken, casual settings. Another similar particle is -하고, which is also commonly used in spoken Korean and can often be interchanged with -랑/이랑 without a significant difference in meaning, though -하고 might feel slightly more neutral in formality than -랑/이랑.
When emphasizing the idea of 'togetherness', -랑/이랑 is frequently paired with 같이 or 함께 (e.g., 친구랑 같이 영화를 봤어요 - I watched a movie with my friend).
