Starting Points & Range · from, starting from, since
-부터 is a particle that marks the starting point of an action, event, or state. It specifies the origin from which something begins, whether it's a time, a place, or even a person or object.
This particle is directly attached to nouns, pronouns, or adverbs that denote the beginning of something. It is commonly used to express:
It often implies a continuation or progression from that initial point, distinguishing it slightly from -에서 when -에서 indicates a simple origin without necessarily implying a 'starting point' for an action that continues.
The particle -부터 attaches directly to the preceding noun, pronoun, or adverb without any changes or conjugations based on final consonants or vowels. It is simply appended.
While -에서 can also indicate 'from' (especially for a place where an action originates or departs), -부터 specifically emphasizes the beginning point of an action or state that often continues or extends. For instance, '집에서 나왔어요' (I came out from home) uses -에서 for departure, while '아침부터 공부했어요' (I studied from morning) uses -부터 to mark the start of the studying period.
It is frequently used with -까지 (until/to) to express a range: 'A부터 B까지' (from A to B).
It can also be used to emphasize 'even from' or 'starting with' a particular item in a list or group, implying that even the first or least expected item is included.
