States & Progress · is/am/are -ing; to be in the process of; to be wearing/holding/sitting/standing
The grammar pattern -고 있다 is a fundamental and frequently used expression in Korean, primarily indicating that an action or state is currently in progress or ongoing. It is one of the most direct ways to express the present continuous tense in Korean.
-고 있다 is primarily used in two main contexts:
To describe an action happening at the moment of speaking: This is its most common usage, directly translating to "is/am/are -ing" in English. It signifies that an event or activity is actively unfolding right now.
To describe a continuous state or condition: For certain verbs, especially those related to wearing, holding, or carrying, -고 있다 indicates a maintained state rather than an ongoing action. This state is the result of a previous action and continues to be true.
To describe a repeated or habitual action over a period: While less common than the first two, -고 있다 can also indicate an action that is ongoing over a longer period, even if not happening at the exact moment of speaking, or a repeated action.
The -고 있다 pattern is straightforward to conjugate:
