Conditions & Hypotheses · Regardless of; No matter whether/what/who/where; It doesn't matter if...
The connective ending -든지 is used to express that the action or state described in the following clause remains constant or unaffected, regardless of the choice, condition, or option presented in the preceding clause. It conveys a sense of indifference or irrelevance towards the specific option or situation.
-든지 is primarily used in situations where the speaker wants to emphasize that a particular choice or condition does not influence the subsequent action or outcome. It can be used in a few common patterns:
With interrogative pronouns (누구, 무엇, 어디, 언제, 어떻게, 왜): When combined with interrogative words, it creates the meaning of "no matter who/what/where/when/how/why."
Presenting two or more options (A든지 B든지): This structure means "whether it's A or B, it doesn't matter." The result will be the same.
With a single verb/adjective: It can also be used with a single verb or adjective to express "no matter if [verb/adjective]..." or "whether [verb/adjective] or not..."
The core idea is that the specific choice or condition is unimportant for the main clause's statement.
The ending -든지 is attached directly to the verb stem or adjective stem. There are no special changes based on whether the stem ends in a vowel or a consonant.
-(으)나마나 (which implies an action is useless or makes no difference), -(으)나마나 specifically focuses on the futility of an action, whereas 든지 focuses on the irrelevance of a choice or condition.-(으)면 or -아/어서 because 든지 explicitly states that the condition's specifics don't alter the subsequent event.
