Overview
The Korean grammatical expression -만큼 is used to indicate that something is "as much as," "as...as," or "to the extent of" the preceding element. It functions as a particle when attached to nouns and as a connective ending when attached to verbs or adjectives, expressing a comparison of degree, quantity, or extent.
Usage
-만큼 primarily serves to draw a comparison, signifying that the degree, amount, or level of the following statement is equivalent or proportional to the preceding one.
- With Nouns: When attached directly to a noun, it means "as much as [Noun]" or "to the extent of [Noun]."
- Example: 돈 만큼 (as much as money), 노력 만큼 (as much as effort).
- With Verbs and Adjectives: When attached to verbs or adjectives, it requires an adnominal (modifier) form.
- It indicates that the action or state described in the main clause is proportional to the action or state described in the preceding clause.
- This can express a sense of "to the degree that," "in proportion to," or "just as."
- It is frequently used to compare effort and result, expectation and reality, or quantity and quality.

Knowledge Plus
- -만큼 vs. -처럼: While both can express similarity, -만큼 implies a direct equivalence in degree, quantity, or extent, suggesting "as much as" or "to the same extent." -처럼 (like, similar to) indicates a resemblance or similarity in manner or appearance, but not necessarily an equal degree or amount. For example, "천사처럼 예쁘다" (pretty like an angel) describes appearance, while "천사만큼 예쁘다" (as pretty as an angel) implies an equivalent level of beauty.
- Expressing Capability/Sufficiency: When used with the future adnominal form (-(으)ㄹ 만큼), it can also express "enough to" or "to the point where one can."
- 예: 배가 터질 만큼 먹었어요. (I ate enough to burst my stomach.)
- Implied Reason/Cause: In some contexts, -만큼 can carry a nuance of "because" or "since," implying that the degree of the preceding action/state is the reason for the following.
- 예: 열심히 공부한 만큼 시험을 잘 봤어요. (I did well on the exam because I studied hard / as much as I studied hard.)
