Contrast & Concession · Whether or not; Regardless of whether; No matter if.
The grammatical pattern -거나 말거나 is a powerful expression used to convey that a certain action or outcome will occur regardless of a preceding choice, condition, or state. It combines the connective ending -거나 (meaning 'or') with the verb 말다 (to stop, to not do) followed by -거나 again, literally translating to 'whether [verb] or not [verb]'.
This pattern is primarily used to express indifference or irrelevance to a given situation or choice. It highlights that the speaker's (or the subject's) decision, action, or the natural course of events is unaffected by the alternatives presented. It often implies a strong will, determination, or a sense of inevitability. It can be used with both verbs and descriptive verbs (adjectives). The subject of the first clause (the 'whether' part) and the main clause can be the same or different, but the core idea is that the main clause's action/state is independent of the first clause's condition.
The pattern -거나 말거나 attaches directly to verb stems and descriptive verb (adjective) stems.
Note: The 말거나 part is fixed and always uses the verb 말다.
While -거나 alone means 'or' (listing choices), the addition of 말거나 specifically emphasizes the irrelevance of the choice. It's stronger than just saying 'whether or not' because '말다' explicitly negates the action. It often carries a nuance of 'I don't care if you do X or not, I will do Y' or 'Regardless of X, Y will happen.' This expression is frequently used in situations where the speaker wants to assert their will or highlight an unchangeable fact. It can sometimes be interchangeable with -든지 말든지 in certain contexts, but -거나 말거나 often feels a bit more direct and resolute.
