Overview
The connective ending -느라(고) is used to express that the action in the preceding clause is the reason or cause for the action or state in the following clause. It often implies that the preceding action required time, effort, or attention, leading to a consequence, which is frequently negative, or an inability to do something else. The '고' is optional and can be omitted without changing the meaning.
Usage
-느라(고) is primarily used when:
- The preceding action is the direct cause of the following result.
- The subject was occupied or busy with the first action, making it difficult or impossible to do something else.
- The result is frequently negative, a difficulty, or an inability to do something else (e.g., being late, tired, unable to meet someone).
- It cannot be used with descriptive verbs (adjectives) or with '이다' (to be).
- The subject of both clauses must be the same.
- The tense is expressed in the main clause, not in -느라(고).
Conjugation Rules
-느라(고) attaches directly to the verb stem, regardless of whether the stem ends in a consonant or a vowel.
- Verb stem + 느라(고)
- 먹다 (to eat) -> 먹느라(고)
- 만들다 (to make) -> 만드느라(고)
- 공부하다 (to study) -> 공부하느라(고)
- 준비하다 (to prepare) -> 준비하느라(고)
Knowledge Plus
- Comparison with -아/어서 and -기 때문에: While all three express reasons, -느라(고) carries a specific nuance. -아/어서 is a general reason, often for a natural sequence or emotional cause, and cannot be used with imperative/propositive endings. -기 때문에 expresses a more objective or strong reason and can be used with descriptive verbs. -느라(고) specifically implies that the reason was an activity that occupied the subject's time or effort, often leading to a negative or difficult outcome. It cannot be used with descriptive verbs and requires the same subject for both clauses.
- Common Contexts: This ending is frequently used when the main clause expresses regret, difficulty, or inability, often with verbs like 늦다 (to be late), 힘들다 (to be difficult/tired), 못 하다 (cannot do), 잊다 (to forget), etc.
- Optional '고': The '고' in -느라(고) is optional. Both 'V+느라' and 'V+느라고' are grammatically correct and convey the same meaning, with '고' sometimes adding a slight emphasis or smoother flow.
